Netflix Q3 2026: profit beat its own forecast, the outlook came lower

Netflix's third-quarter 2026 profit came in above its own July forecast, with an operating margin of 34.6% against the 33.2% it had projected. Its shares still fell about 6% in after-hours trading on October 20, 2026, news reports said, and those reports pointed to the outlook: Netflix now forecasts 11.5% revenue growth for the fourth quarter and about $2.7 billion in 2026 ad revenue, down from about $3.0 billion in July.

Every quarter, Netflix publishes a shareholder letter that it files with the SEC as part of a Form 8-K. Each letter reports the quarter just ended and gives the company's own forecast for the next one. That allows a clean comparison: the forecast Netflix published on July 16, 2026 against the results it reported on October 20, 2026 for the quarter ended September 30. The figures here come only from those letters and Netflix's SEC filings, not from analyst estimates.

Revenue was $12.87 billion against a July forecast of $12.86 billion, a gap of about 0.1% that Netflix called consistent with its forecast, so revenue was in line. It was up 11.8% from the same quarter a year earlier. Operating margin, which is operating income as a share of revenue, reached 34.6%, above the 33.2% forecast and up from 28.2% a year earlier. Net income was $3.66 billion against a forecast of $3.45 billion, and diluted earnings per share were $0.87 against $0.82. Netflix said the margin was ahead of its forecast "primarily due to the timing of expenses."

Net income rose 44% from the third quarter of 2025, but the base matters. In that earlier quarter Netflix booked a Brazilian tax expense of about $619 million, which it said reduced that quarter's operating margin by more than five percentage points; the expense covered the period from 2022 to the third quarter of 2025. Adding it back to the year-earlier operating income of $3.25 billion and comparing the result with this quarter's $4.46 billion gives operating income growth of about 15%, a computed, pre-tax figure.

A profit beat followed by a falling share price can look contradictory. The growth figures help explain it. Year-over-year revenue growth was 17.2% in the third quarter of 2025 and 17.6% in the fourth, then slowed to 16.2%, 13.4% and now 11.8%, the slowest since the third quarter of 2023, when it was 7.8% (computed from SEC filings). For the fourth quarter of 2026, Netflix forecasts 11.5%.

The fourth-quarter margin forecast of 26.0% can look like a sharp step down from 34.6%, but the fourth quarter also ran lower a year ago: 24.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025, against 28.2% in the third. Netflix says the 26.0% includes about 1.2 points of impact from headcount reductions, and it remains above the year-earlier figure.

The clearest change is in advertising. In July, Netflix said it expected approximately $3 billion in ad revenue for 2026. In October it put the figure at about $2.7 billion, citing a "slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities." Its full-year 2026 revenue forecast is now $51.1 billion, up 13% and 0.2% below the mid-point of its earlier range of $51.0 to $51.4 billion. In the regular session on October 20, before the results, the shares closed down 1.66%; the after-hours drop of about 6% is as reported by news outlets, which attributed it to the outlook.

A share price reflects what buyers and sellers think of future results, so a lower outlook can outweigh a stronger quarter that is already reported. Here, Netflix attributed its profit beat to the timing of expenses, while the figures it lowered, ad revenue and growth, describe the quarters ahead.
