Companies that reported earnings ABOVE the analyst estimate and whose shares fell at least 5% anyway, measured as the two-session move spanning the report date. A beat followed by a fall is not unusual on its own — it happens to nearly half of all beats — so this screen requires a material drop rather than any drop at all. The window is the two sessions spanning the report date, because filings carry a date and not a time — a company that reports before the open moves that day, one that reports after the close moves the next. It is a record of what happened, not a judgement of the result. Earnings figures come from analyst-estimate data; report dates are established from the company’s own SEC filings, and a quarter whose filing we do not hold is left out rather than guessed at.
