Companies expected to earn less than $0.10 a share — or to lose money — are left out of this ranking rather than shown with a percent their own arithmetic makes meaningless. 894 of the 2,941 companies with a surprise on their last quarter are left out on that rule.
A report DATE is established from the company’s own SEC filings, and a quarter whose filing we do not hold is left out rather than guessed at. The window is the two sessions spanning the report date, because filings carry a date and not a time — a company that reports before the open moves that day, one that reports after the close moves the next. It is a record of what happened, not a judgement of the result.
